Identity Matrix

Definition

The identity matrix In\boldsymbol{I}_n is the n×nn\times n matrix with 11 on the main diagonal and 00 everywhere else.

Interpretation

The identity matrix acts like the number 11 for matrix multiplication: multiplying by it changes nothing. Its columns are the standard basis vectors e1,…,en\boldsymbol{e}_1,\ldots,\boldsymbol{e}_n of Rn\mathbb{R}^n.

The 3 by 3 identity matrix with ones on the diagonal, next to a square in the plane with a vector v that the identity maps to itself.

The left part shows I3\boldsymbol{I}_3 with its ones on the main diagonal shaded. The right part shows the map v↦Iv\boldsymbol{v}\mapsto\boldsymbol{I}\boldsymbol{v} in the plane, given by I2\boldsymbol{I}_2: the square and the vector v\boldsymbol{v} stay where they are, since Iv=v\boldsymbol{I}\boldsymbol{v}=\boldsymbol{v}. As a linear map, I\boldsymbol{I} is the identity function.

The reason is visible in the row-times-column rule: row ii of I\boldsymbol{I} has a single 11, in position ii, so multiplying it with a column picks out the iith entry of that column and nothing else. In the language of algebraic structures, In\boldsymbol{I}_n is the identity element for multiplication of n×nn\times n matrices. The subscript gives the size and is dropped when the size is clear from the product; for a non-square A\boldsymbol{A}, the identity on the left and the one on the right have different sizes.

The identity matrix is also the target of Gauss-Jordan elimination: when the coefficient part of an augmented matrix has become I\boldsymbol{I}, the system has a unique solution, which stands in the last column. Elementary matrices are obtained from I\boldsymbol{I} by one row operation. The identity matrix returns later in the definition of the inverse matrix, A−1A=I\boldsymbol{A}^{-1}\boldsymbol{A}=\boldsymbol{I}.
