Complex Absolute Value

Definition

Given a complex number z=a+ibz=a+\mathrm{i}b where a,b∈Ra,b\in\mathbb{R}, the absolute value or modulus of zz, denoted ∣z∣|z|, is the real number ∣z∣=a2+b2.|z| = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}.

Interpretation

The modulus ∣z∣|z| measures the length of zz: its distance from 00 in the complex plane. The square root in the definition is the nonnegative root, so ∣z∣≥0|z|\ge0, with ∣z∣=0|z|=0 only for z=0z=0.

A complex number z = a + bi drawn as an arrow from 0, forming a right triangle with sides a and b, whose hypotenuse is the modulus.

The arrow from 00 to z=a+biz=a+b\mathrm{i} is the hypotenuse of a right triangle with a horizontal side of length aa and a vertical side of length bb, so by Pythagoras its length is a2+b2\sqrt{a^2+b^2}. In another quadrant the sides have lengths ∣a∣|a| and ∣b∣|b|, which gives the same formula, since ∣a∣2=a2|a|^2=a^2.

Drag zz: ∣z∣|z| is its distance from 00, the hypotenuse of a right triangle with legs ∣a∣|a| and ∣b∣|b|.

For a real number z=az=a the formula gives a2=∣a∣\sqrt{a^2}=|a|, so the modulus extends the absolute value of real numbers, and the same notation is used. As for real numbers, ∣z−w∣|z-w| is the distance between zz and ww.

A common slip is to compute ∣z∣2|z|^2 as z2z^2. The correct identity uses the conjugate, ∣z∣2=zz‾|z|^2=z\overline{z}: for z=iz=\mathrm{i} one has z2=−1z^2=-1 but ∣z∣2=1|z|^2=1.

The modulus is multiplicative, ∣zw∣=∣z∣ ∣w∣|zw|=|z|\,|w|, so multiplying by ww stretches lengths by the factor ∣w∣|w|. Together with the argument, the modulus gives the polar form of zz. The same Pythagorean length later measures vectors in Rn\mathbb{R}^n, as the Euclidean norm.

Key Results

  • While it is true that ∣z∣=z2|z| = \sqrt{z^2} when zz is a real number, it does not hold whenever zz is a non-real complex number, i.e., ∣z∣≠z2|z| \neq \sqrt{z^2} for z∈(C∖R)z\in (\mathbb{C}\setminus \mathbb{R}).
  • The modulus is multiplicative, ∣zw∣=∣z∣ ∣w∣|zw|=|z|\,|w|, and ∣z∣2=zzˉ|z|^2=z\bar z.

Examples

  • ∣1+i∣=2|1+\mathrm{i}|=\sqrt{2}.
  • ∣z∣=1|z|=1 represents a unit circle in the complex plane.
