RHS Sensitivity Range

Definition

A right-hand-side sensitivity range is the interval for one constraint's right-hand side over which the current optimal basis remains feasible and optimal, with other parameters fixed. Within this range, its shadow price gives the exact linear change in optimal value.

Interpretation

In sensitivity analysis, the right-hand-side range answers how far the amount of one resource may change before its shadow price stops being valid. Inside the range the same constraints stay binding, so the same basis describes the optimum. The production quantities do change, but the optimal value changes at the constant rate of the shadow price, so a valid shadow price does not imply an unchanged solution.

The feasible pentagon with the finishing constraint drawn for right-hand sides 80, 100 and 120; as the value changes, the optimal corner slides along the carpentry line from (0, 80) to (40, 40).

The finishing constraint 2xs+xt≤b12x_s+x_t\le b_1 is drawn for b1=80b_1=80, 100100 and 120120. As b1b_1 grows, the optimal corner, where the finishing and carpentry lines cross, slides along the carpentry line xs+xt=80x_s+x_t=80 from (0,80)(0,80) to (40,40)(40,40), passing (20,60)(20,60) at b1=100b_1=100. Along the way z∗=3xs+2xtz^*=3x_s+2x_t grows from 160160 to 200200, one unit per added hour, matching the shadow price 11.

Change the finishing hours b1b_1: inside the shaded range the same constraints stay binding, and z∗z^* grows linearly in b1b_1 (right).

The endpoints are where the crossing point would leave the feasible region: below 8080 it would need xs<0x_s<0, and above 120120 it would violate the demand limit xs≤40x_s\le40. Beyond them another corner is optimal and the rate changes. For b1≤80b_1\le80 only trains are made and z∗=2b1z^*=2b_1, a rate of 22 per hour; above 120120 the optimum stays at (40,40)(40,40) and extra finishing hours are worth 00.

A common slip is to value a large change with the old shadow price. Raising b1b_1 from 100100 to 130130 adds 3030 hours, but z∗z^* rises only from 180180 to 200200, not to 210210.

Key Results

  • Use bi−di≤binew≤bi+uib_i-d_i\le b_i^{\mathrm{new}}\le b_i+u_i from the report.
  • A slack resource can often be reduced by its unused amount without affecting the current decision.
  • A change beyond the range cannot generally be valued by multiplying the full change by the old shadow price.

Examples

For the illustrated finishing right-hand side (RHS) b1b_1, the valid range is [80,120][80,120]. The intersection with xs+xt=80x_s+x_t=80 moves from (0,80)(0,80) to (40,40)(40,40); at the upper endpoint the demand limit also binds. With the illustrated objective, the shadow price is 1 per added finishing hour throughout the range.

  • The metal RHS is 960, with allowable increase 240 and decrease 360; the range is 600 to 1,200.
  • Milk availability can fall from 200 to 180 in the ice-cream example without changing its plan or value.
