Algebraic Structure

Definition

An algebraic structure consists of a set together with one or more operations on that set.

Interpretation

An algebraic structure packages a set with rules for combining its elements. The set gives the objects; each binary operation, a rule A×A→AA\times A\to A, says how two objects combine into a third.

A vertical chain from a set with one operation to semigroup, monoid, group, Abelian group, ring, field and vector space, each step labelled with the property it adds.

The figure reads from top to bottom, each arrow adding one requirement: an associative operation gives a semigroup, an identity element a monoid, inverses a group, and commutativity an Abelian group. A ring adds a second operation that is associative and distributes over ++, and a field also asks this multiplication to be commutative, with an identity 1≠01\neq0 and inverses for all nonzero elements. Down to the field, each structure is also every structure above it. The last box is different: a vector space is an Abelian group (V,+)(V,+) whose elements can be multiplied by scalars from a field.

One set can carry several structures. With N={0,1,2,…}\mathbb{N}=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}, (N,+)(\mathbb{N},+) is a monoid but not a group, since 11 has no additive inverse in N\mathbb{N}. (Z,+)(\mathbb{Z},+) is an Abelian group, and (Z,+,⋅)(\mathbb{Z},+,\cdot) is a ring but not a field, since 22 has no multiplicative inverse in Z\mathbb{Z}. Q\mathbb{Q}, R\mathbb{R} and C\mathbb{C} with ordinary addition and multiplication are fields.

This is why the abstract names are worth learning: a fact proved once for all groups, such as the uniqueness of inverses, holds at once for real numbers under addition, nonzero real numbers under multiplication and permutations under composition.
