OR Study Cycle¶
Definition¶
The OR study cycle moves from a real situation to an assumed representation of it, then to a mathematical model, a solution, validation, and implementation. Validation checks whether the model and its solution adequately represent the practical decision problem.
Interpretation¶
The OR study cycle describes how a practical decision problem becomes a model, a solution and finally an implemented decision. Its main message is that a mathematically correct answer can still be wrong for the real problem if the model leaves out something essential.
Follow the arrows: the real situation is abstracted into an assumed representation (which simplifications, which data), formulated as a mathematical model, solved and checked. If the answer makes sense it is accepted and implemented; if not, the dashed arrow leads back to the assumptions or the model, not only to the calculation.
Validation is different from checking the computation. A solution can be computed correctly and still be rejected because the model was too simple, for example a route plan based on straight-line distances where the roads are far from straight. Each extra detail makes the model more realistic, but it also needs more data and makes the model harder to solve, so the cycle is often run several times with gradually refined models.
The optimization model is only one stage of the cycle, and an algorithm or software package performs only the solution stage; interpreting, validating and implementing the answer are separate parts of operations research.
Key Results¶
- Additional detail may improve realism but also increase data requirements and solution difficulty.
- The required data must be available or obtainable.
- Validation can reveal a need to revise assumptions before implementation.
Examples¶
Any stage can prompt a return to an earlier stage if validation shows that the simplified representation is inadequate.
- A route model may initially approximate travel distances by straight lines.
- Road layout and time-dependent traffic may require a more detailed route model.
