Conditional Expectation Given a Random Variable¶
Definition¶
For integrable (that is, ), the conditional expectation is a function of satisfying the averaging identity for every event determined by . When a conditional PMF or PDF exists,
The sum or integral is selected by the conditional law of , not by whether the conditioning variable is discrete or continuous.
The Expectation calculation averages the possible values of under its conditional law. In the continuous case, the weighting function is the Conditional Probability Density Function, not the marginal PDF of .
Interpretation¶
Conditioning on a variable produces a new random variable: is the average of predicted from the value of , and it changes with the value observed. Evaluating it at a fixed value gives an ordinary number.
In the illustrated triangular model, with density on , the vertical slice at shows that the conditional distribution of given is uniform on , with mean ; at this is the red point at height . Evaluating this function at the random gives .
Each value of has its own conditional mean (right); is a random variable.
For each fixed , compute the number from the conditional PMF or density, as in the Definition; then substitute the random . The averaging identity explains what the result is: over every event determined by , the variable has the same average as . With it gives , which is Adam’s law. In the triangle, , which is indeed .
For discrete , the random variable takes the value on the event , so it collects the numbers of conditional expectation given an event into one random variable. Its working rules are taking out what is known and the independent case.
Keep three objects apart: is a number, is a number for each , and is a random variable, a function of .
