Location and Scale Property of the MGF¶
Proposition¶
For real constants and (no positivity is needed for ),
for every at which is finite.
Starting from the Moment Generating Function definition, . The deterministic shift comes outside the expectation and the scale changes the MGF argument.
Interpretation¶
A shift contributes an exponential factor to an MGF, while a scale changes its argument. Both follow from : the constant factor moves outside the expectation, and the scale stays inside, where it multiplies .
The figure turns the standard normal into : the density is first spread wider by the factor and then shifted to centre . In MGF terms, gives . This is the MGF of with and .
Change and : , and the slope at becomes .
The expression means scaling by first and shifting by second. Because the scale enters through , the formula holds only where is finite: for , is finite only for . A negative reflects the distribution, and the formula covers that case without change.
Differentiating at recovers the familiar rules and , as in moments from the MGF. Combined with uniqueness, the property shows that for every , which is the basis of standardization.
