Local Injectivity, Surjectivity, and Bijectivity¶
Theorem¶
Let , let , and let with .
- is locally injective at if nearby equations have at most one nearby solution.
- is locally surjective at if nearby equations have at least one nearby solution.
- is locally bijective at if nearby equations have exactly one nearby solution.
If is , then (see the Jacobian rank theorem) full column rank of implies local injectivity, full row rank implies local surjectivity, and square full rank implies local bijectivity.
Interpretation¶
These local properties ask what happens when the equation is solved for close to , looking only at close to : at most one solution (injective), at least one (surjective), or exactly one (bijective).
The function is locally bijective near , where : inside the green band the line at height meets the graph once, at . At the fold , where , the level has two preimages close to and the level has none, so is neither locally injective nor locally surjective there.
The rank conditions transfer facts about linear maps to . The linear map is injective if and only if its kernel is , which means full column rank, and surjective if and only if its range is all of , which means full row rank. By the Jacobian rank theorem, a map inherits the property of its Jacobian near . The rank conditions are sufficient, not necessary: is bijective although .
Injectivity goes with a left inverse and surjectivity with a right inverse (left and right inverses). The square case is the multivariable inverse function theorem.
A common slip is to conclude a global property from local ones. The map has Jacobian determinant , so it is locally bijective at every point, yet and have the same image.
Key Results¶
- Full column rank gives local uniqueness of nearby solutions.
- Full row rank gives local existence of nearby solutions.
- If and , the function is locally bijective at .
Examples¶
- The map is locally surjective from to at every point.
- The map is locally injective because its Jacobian has full column rank.
