Death Benefits Payable at Fractional-Year Boundaries

Definition

A unit death benefit payable at the end of the 1/m1/m-year interval of death is paid at τm=⌈mTx⌉/m\tau_m=\lceil mT_x\rceil/m, for a positive integer mm. Its actuarial present value (APV) is Ax(m)=E[vτm]A_x^{(m)}=\mathbb{E}[v^{\tau_m}]. Mortality is continuous, so death exactly on a payment boundary has probability zero.

Interpretation

Settlement at frequency mm leaves a waiting time of less than 1/m1/m year after death. Refining to a frequency that is an integer multiple of mm cannot increase the waiting time for any death. An arbitrary higher frequency need not reduce every realized wait because its calendar grid may not contain the earlier grid. Unlike an annuity payable mm times a year, this is one benefit payment, not mm instalments of 1/m1/m.

Time axis with quarter-year ticks: a death at T_x = 2.13 is followed by a quarterly-settlement payment at time 2.25 and an annual-settlement payment at time 3.

The figure shows the example with death at Tx=2.13T_x=2.13. With quarterly settlement the benefit is paid at the next quarter-year mark, τ4=⌈4×2.13⌉/4=2.25\tau_4=\lceil 4\times2.13\rceil/4=2.25, so the wait is less than 1/41/4 year; with annual settlement it is paid at the end of the year of death, time 3.

Move mm and drag the probe TxT_x: the benefit waits until the next 1/m1/m-year mark, so Ax(m)A_x^{(m)} converges to Aˉx\bar A_x as m→∞m\to\infty for nonnegative interest. For positive interest it is nondecreasing along nested refinements, when each new frequency is an integer multiple of the preceding one; arbitrary increases in mm need not be monotone. With m=4m=4, a death at 2.132.13 is paid at 2.252.25.

Whole life insurance provides the same death benefit with either annual or immediate settlement. The fractional-year version changes the settlement grid. Under uniform distribution of deaths (UDD), the fraction of the year lived is uniform and independent of the year of death, allowing within-year discounting to be averaged separately.

Key Results

  • Ax(m)=∑k=0∞v(k+1)/m(k/mpx−(k+1)/mpx)\displaystyle A_x^{(m)}=\sum_{k=0}^\infty v^{(k+1)/m}({}_{k/m}p_x-{}_{(k+1)/m}p_x).
  • As m→∞m\to\infty, Ax(m)→AˉxA_x^{(m)}\to\bar A_x for nonnegative interest.
  • Under UDD in each year and i>0i>0, Ax(m)=[i/i(m)]AxA_x^{(m)}=[i/i^{(m)}]A_x, where i(m)=m((1+i)1/m−1)i^{(m)}=m((1+i)^{1/m}-1).
  • For i>0i>0, the continuous limit is Aˉx=(i/δ)Ax\bar A_x=(i/\delta)A_x under UDD, with δ=log⁡(1+i)\delta=\log(1+i). At i=0i=0, timing does not change the present value of the unit death benefit.

Examples

For quarterly settlement (m=4m=4), death at Tx=2.13T_x=2.13 leads to payment at time 2.25. Annual settlement would pay at time 3.
